Minutes from March 2, 2011

We had another great meeting today with 43 members present for Mike Salter's presentation.  We're really fortunate to have Mike with us this year as he is not only a wealth of information for our computers, but he is an entertaining speaker as well.

Using an Organizer:  We covered a number of topics today starting with how to use an organizer.  Almost every email program is in itself an organizer as it contains a full list of your contacts, a calendar where you can enter dates and set reminders, and most have a task list where you can list those "to do" items.  Look closely at your email program and learn to use it to its full capability.  In the contacts section, you can enter notes, birthdays, anniversaries, etc and set reminders.  These reminders usually send you an email alerting you to the event.  You can set recurring items so that birthday reminder pops up year after year.  Don't be afraid to click on the buttons and rev up that email program you already use.  Get in the habit of posting to your electronic calendar and setting reminders.  Microsoft Outlook Express and Windows Live Mail are excellent programs that combine many tools for your organized lifestyle.

Windows Live Essentials:  Click on this LINK to take you to Windows Life Essentials where you can download the latest and greatest for photo gallery, Windows Live Mail, and other up-to-date features.

How to burn a CD or DVD:  Mike did a great job on explaining the process of burning to a CD using either the live file system or the mastered format.  Click on this LINK to go to his website where the information is presented in a .pdf file you can read, download, and/or print.

Buying a new computer??  Are you thinking of buying a new computer?  Here is a detailed, easy to understand, guide line of all the things to consider before cruising through the store.  This is a 17 page .pdf file on Mike's website:  LINK

Thank you, again, Mike for your generous donation and sharing of your time and talents.

Congratulations to our door prize winners:
  • Mary Jo Weaver -- a set of speakers
  • Betty Zellers -- 4 gig flash drive
  • Deenie Stewart -- notebook & keychain

Now fellow members of the computer club -- it is YOUR TURN to present and show off your computer knowledge!!  At our next meeting on March 9, bring "something" from your computer to share with the group.  It can be a selection of photos of some exciting adventure....or a cool tip/trick you've learned....or a favorite website you've stumbled upon.  Bring something to share.  Keep the topic to a simple short five-minute presentation.  Put the photos on a flash drive or CD so we can show them on the big projector.  Mike will load the pictures onto his computer so all you have to do is bring them in.  We have a microphone system now so you can stay comfortably seated if you wish.  Don't let stage fright scare you away.  Share with us!!  It should be a fun and entertaining morning!
